Frequently Asked Questions

Can you trace Irish people?

Yes. My areas of genealogy expertise are in England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Irish ancestry can be tricky partly due to the Public Record Office fire of 1922, but it’s a myth that this event made irish ancestry impossible.

What if my ancestors weren't from the UK?

It is often possible — and sometimes easier! — to research ancestors from outside the UK, particularly those from the United States, Australia and many parts of Europe. A vast number of international records are available online and I've had great success with many family trees where an ancestor was born outside the UK.

What if some of my ancestors can’t be traced?

It's rare I can't find someone. Occassionally, particulary before civil registration (when birth, marriage and death certification became law), it may not be possible to find an exact date or birth or death, in which case you may see approximation (e.g. 'c1832') or reference to the last known record (e.g. c1832 - >1867)

Can you use DNA?

My area of expertise is in paper records so while I can use DNA results to resolve some queries, complex cases require a Genetic Genealogist.

What if I’m adopted?

If you'd like to trace the ancestors of your biological parents, you'll need to know their identities. This can usually be achieved by gaining access to adoption records, DNA or a combination of the two. To find out more about adoption records, visit www.gov.uk/adoption-records
